Cynthia’s Story

In January 2024 Amaudo staff found Cynthia living on the streets of Umuahia. She was very unwell, frightened, and had clearly been unable to care for herself for some time. Her clothes were torn, and she appeared withdrawn and confused. The team approached her and eventually gained her trust to bring her back to Amaudo 1, where she could receive care and begin her journey to recovery. At Amaudo 1, Cynthia was given a safe place to rest, nutritious meals, and medical attention. She began responding positively to treatment within a few weeks, showing gradual improvement in her physical health and emotional stability. The staff and residents welcomed her warmly and encouraged her to join in daily activities. With the help of a dedicated student nurse, Amaudo was able to trace her family to Benue State - almost 400 miles away. When contact was made, Cynthia’s family shared that she had been struggling with her mental health for many years. Her illness had led to deep isolation and distress, eventually causing her to abandon her child and wander away from home. Her brother was overjoyed and deeply relieved to learn that Cynthia had been found, was safe, and that her health was improving. The news brought joy to the whole family, who expressed their readiness to welcome her back and support her recovery. Amaudo staff worked closely with Cynthia’s relatives to prepare them for her return and together they created a plan to ensure that Cynthia would have access to local services once she returned home. On Saturday, 2nd March 2024, Cynthia’s younger brother made the long journey from Benue to Amaudo to collect her and take her home. Today, Cynthia is back home with her family, reunited with her child, and thriving in her community. She continues to receive follow-up care and support, and her family remains committed to helping her stay well.
